Farmers in Torit on Tuesday raised concerns over unnecessary setting of fire which they say have destroyed their gardens before harvest.
Speaking in Arabic, Sunday Adelina Oliha, a farmer in Marwari residential area said her garden was burnt into ashes and worries of hunger in her family, Radio Emmanuel reported.
The mother of seven children said her family has nothing to eat since her garden have been burn by unknown person or group of persons.
‘We don’t know how the people are getting from here to go and burn the garden whether she/he come from where, like this children they are staying hungry if got even though in the plate I have to bring them to eat with them the one of the garden which I got from my sweat it is already done and I don’t know am not working but only digging either in the office either where, in the market I am not working am only moving to the garden and the bush when I got firewood I bring I eat with my children’, she complained.
Meanwhile Imelda Iter Ohucholi, another farmer, called on government to intervene and address the issue of bush burning.
Imelda worries of hunger in the near days since she is old enough to collect firewood to sustain her family.
‘My garden is burned, the fire finished my garden is not seen I went and just found my garden got burned, it is like that am going to stay so it is the government that has power so I cannot go anywhere to collect firewood’, she noted.
Burning of garden in Torit has become a major concern to all farmers during harvest, discouraging some farmers from involving in agricultural production, Iter explained.
