Medicines Sans Frontier or MSF has constructed a waste management zone at Juba Teaching Hospital and handed over to the national Ministry of Health.

In a statement to CRN, MSF says the purpose of the construction is for proper and safe disposal of medical waste because it was difficult to dispose in a safe way, which could lead to the spread of diseases or other health issues.

MSF’s Head of Mission Claudio Miglietta expresses his gratitude for the successful construction and handover ceremony.

He says the waste management zone includes; a high-temperature incinerator for the disposal of medical waste as well as 16 pits for the encapsulation and disposal of drugs and materials which cannot be incinerated.

It also includes ash from the incinerator, organic medical waste, sharps needles and glasses or empty vessels from used medicines.

Miglietta appreciates the Director General of the Drug and Food Control Authority, Dr. Peter Aguek Kon Baak and the Director of Juba Teaching Hospital, Dr. Isaac Cleto, for their excellent support and fruitful cooperation.

The MSF Head of Mission says the project is critical to ensuring the safe, sustainable and efficient destruction of materials and medical waste.

He hopes the project will be efficiently managed and maintained for the years to come to further strengthen their mutual ties.
