Lakes Governor regretted last week’s action by a section of new police who harassed ladies in trousers and men with dreadlocks in Rumbek.
Some police officers in green outfits last week were beating and fining women wearing trousers claiming that it was unlawful. Some men were also harassed because they had long hair braids.
Speaking to the press earlier this week, governor Chol Tong Mayay called the police ignorant and accused them of taking the law into their own hands.
He added that the incidents were unfortunate and the under training police were in Rumbek to get some practice.
He said some police officers were disciplined and others sent back to their barracks.
One of the ladies caught in the crackdown told Good News Radio through a translator that the action by the police was an affront to the people who had just voted in a referendum that promised freedom.
She advised women to avoid confrontations with the officers by not wearing trousers.
Many ladies say it is convenient to wear trousers especially if they have to travel around the town on taxi motorbikes.
