The International Committee of the Red Cross or ICRC in partnership with the State Ministry of Gender and Social Development and Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports prepare to commemorate the international day for people with disabilities on Tuesday.
According to ICRC the event will be celebrated under the theme: ‘Future is accessible remember you will not get bored’.
In a statement seen by Good News Radio the celebration will involve activities like football, drama, live performances from local artists and entertainment.
There are only three orthopedic centres in South Sudan supported by the ICRC, where people living with disabilities receive physical therapy and mobility devices such as prosthetics and wheelchairs
According to the ICRC, in 2019 alone, 730 people have been admitted to ICRC’s orthocenters in South Sudan with twenty five of them having suffered amputation.
Eighty wheelchair basketball players, including fifteen women across South Sudan have gathered in Juba for three weeks of training led by two renowned coaches, a South Sudanese-American’s Malat Wei and sport, disability and inclusion advisor for international committee of the Red Cross, Jess Markt. There will be a two days’ tournament from 12 to 13 December 2019.
International day for people with disabilities has been annually observed since 1992 on 3rd December to promote the persons with disabilities and their leaderships.
