The Catholic Bishop of Tombura-Yambio said the referendum was peaceful in Western Equatoria but food and duel are more expensive in the markets of the region.

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala told Fides agency that Arrow Boys, the South Sudanese and the Ugandan military are taking care to protect civilian populations from the Ugandan rebels.

He added that nobody was killed by the Lord’s resistance Army during the vote.

Bishop Hiiboro said more than 80 percent of the voters of West Equatoria chose independence.

The bishop added that the population was very worried about the increase in prices of basic necessities like food and fuel that are much more expensive now.

Bishop Hiiboro said the prices went up because traders were afraid of the LRA and did not supply markets in Western Equatoria.

The return of thousands of people from northern Sudan increased demand for food and other products.
