The European Union observers said the Southern Sudan Referendum was credible and well organised but noted that there was no campaigning for unity in the south and for separation in the north.

EU chief observer Veronique de Keyser told the press in Juba this afternoon that the referendum was conducted in a good manner but without a meaningful debate on the consequences of secession or continued unity.

Ms. De Keyser cited minor cases of intimidation and unauthorized people in some polling centres mainly in Juba.

The EU mission confirmed that these drawbacks do not affect the validity of the process which was characterized by a high degree of transparency and integrity in line with international standards.
