The head of nutrition department at Torit State hospital is telling mothers to exclusively breastfeed their children from 0-6 months to prevent cases of malnutrition.

Rahema Doka told Radio Emmanuel that breastfeeding improves the child’s health.

She adds this years’ harvest have helped reduce cases of malnutrition since there has been enough food.

‘The situation of malnutrition is not high like before and people have cultivated a lot of groundnut this year. If a baby has not gotten enough milk from the mother, the baby can easily be malnourish. Babies from 0-6 months depend on breast feeding. Mothers should eat food in order for breast milk to be enough for the baby. Always breastfeed on time and as frequent as the baby demands.’

Rahema encourages mothers to avoid spending too much time away from their children.

‘I want to tell every mother to breast feed their baby and they should breast feed immediately. Frequent breastfeeding helps the mother produces more milk. Mothers should breast feed as the baby demands not at their own time. Some mothers’ breast feed once a day, this is not good’.

The speaker made the remarks to Radio Emmanuel on Tuesday.
