The Commissioner of Torit County Fermo Peter Isara says this year’s heavy flooding has exposed the population in the area to severe hunger.

Speaking to Radio Emmanuel, he says most gardens have been destroyed by heavy rains.

The commissioner cites Himodonge Payam and Ohiri villages as the most affected areas by floods due to heavy rains.

‘You know food security in my county is very poor, people cultivated very well, but the floods destroyed the whole crops, so we expect hunger next year. In Torit, there are no groundnuts even in Himodonge Payam. Not only in Torit, even in Ohiri and other areas like Bolere-bur Payam, a lot of rains destroyed their crops’, Peter explains.

The Commissioner appeals to government and humanitarian organizations to intervene by delivering aid to flood-affected population as soon as possible.

‘We have already submitted our requests to RRC and other partners to see the situation. You know natural disasters; we cannot encourage them because a natural disaster comes automatically without knowing that it is going to happen’, he adds.

The commissioner was speaking to Radio Emmanuel on a telephone interview on Thursday.
