UN agencies launch food and nutrition week in South Sudan

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO, UNICEF and World Food Program are launching food and nutrition week under the umbrella of ‘Healthy diet’ to mark World Food Day celebration.
 
In a statement sent to CRN, the agencies say the events will promote locally produced nutritious food and good feeding practices contributing to healthier lives.
 
It says on October 16 FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and partners will celebrate World Food Day in Yambio under the theme ‘Healthy diets for a zero hunger world’.
 
World Food Day highlights the need to step up efforts to end hunger and malnutrition and ensure food security and healthy diets for all.
 
The agencies state that on Wednesday the Ministry of Agriculture and partners will lead a panel discussion at Stafford University on promoting local perspective on healthy and sustainable diets in the country.
 
The discussion aims at exploring key policy recommendations which can improve the food security situation.
 
On October 14, representatives from UN agencies and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will also discuss healthy diets on South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation or SSBC.
 
The event aims at raising awareness on the importance and the benefits of healthy and nutritious food.
 
FAO Representative in South Sudan Meshack Malo says ‘Food security is not only about hunger and access to food, it is also about the quality of food and how it affects people’s wellbeing’.
