International Committee of the Red Cross or ICRC Regional Director for Africa Patricia Danzi urged conflict affected states to make laws that enable prosecution of sexual violence perpetrators.

She told UN General Assembly in New York, USA, on Wednesday that the war ravaged nations have to set-up adequate institutions in prison service, police and the military.

Armed forces must integrate prevention of sexual violence into doctrines and trainings, Danzi noted.

She urged states to ensure adequate physical and mental health care in national action plans for management of sexual violence including training of staff and guidelines in local languages.

The Regional Director for Africa said together with health authorities, ICRC have strengthened referral pathways for survivors to access the services they need.

She believe that progress can be made, but that the primary responsibility lies with war affected states to in place mechanisms to first prevent sexual violence.
