United Kingdom government pledged to donate 70 million Sterling Pounds for the five-year second phase of Girls Education South Sudan or GESS program.
GESS team leader Akuja Mading De Garang, while launching the second phase at Juba One Girls’ Primary School on Wednesday thanked the British government for boosting education in the young country.
She said the money will reach the vulnerable and marginalized children to become capable leaders of South Sudan.
The team leader revealed that the number of children in schools has increased to 1.7 million this year compared to the previous years.
Minister of General Education Deng Deng Hoc Yai said the percentage of girls’ enrollment in schools is increasing from 39 percent to 46.5 percent due to the UK support to education.
He exposed that Canadian government is also going to invest in girls’ education in South Sudan
One of the student beneficiaries, Awut Angok Chol, appreciated UK girls’ education support because it helps by paying their school fees and buying school materials.
She urged other girls who had dropped out because of sexual harassment, rape cases and forced marriages to come and continue with their education.
The second phase of Girls Education South Sudan or GESS program was launched on Wednesday in Juba under the theme ‘Inspire-education-transform’.
