International Organization for Migration or IOM says it supported the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to prevent and prepare for natural disaster.
The support was through holding a consultative workshop on the development of disaster risk reduction strategy.
Asar Ul-Haq, Manager of IOM’s Shelter and Settlements Unit, explained that the support and dedication to disaster risk reduction initiatives is important for them.
‘Supporting community resilience is the main objective of settlement work, and IOM is eager to see the government expand its capacity to sustain efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness for effective response and recovery at all levels, the official stressed.
Dr. Mahmudul Islam, Senior Policy Advisor in the ministry said participatory process to develop the strategies allows communities and stakeholders to work together.
He added that with this ownership, the result is that the work gets done and people can get good outputs in implementation of the strategy.
Adequate preparation can significantly reduce or completely mitigate the worst effects of disasters as South Sudan is vulnerable to flooding, drought, heat waves and disease outbreaks.
National disaster risk reduction will act as the cornerstone of action for reducing natural hazard-related disaster risk and set strategic direction until 2024.
