United Nations Children Fund or UNICEF calls on parents in Wau and South Sudan at large to encourage mothers always to breastfeed their child immediately one hour after birth.

UNICEF nutrition officer in Wau Jane Gune says it is the responsibility of maternity workers to enlighten mothers about the importance of breastfeeding within an hour after birth, Voice of Hope Radio reports.

The official while speaking during the launch of World Breastfeeding week at Isaac Stadium on Monday said yellow milk or colostrums are important because it plays a big role in the growth of children.

The nutritionist mentions that according to studies done in 2017, only 75 percent of mothers exclusively breastfeed their children compared to 2010 which was 45.

She urges fathers not to leave the responsibility of raising up their children to mothers alone.

World breastfeeding week this year is being celebrated in Wau under the theme: ‘Empower parents, enable breastfeeding now and for the future’.
