United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS engineers have repaired 2500-kilometer of roads to support economic growth and build a peaceful and successful future of the young country.
UNMISS in a statement says its engineers spent six months leveling and grading roads and repairing culverts and bridges along Juba-Bentiu, Juba-Bor-Pibor and Malakal roads.
Head of UNMISS, David Shearer said ‘the efforts of our engineers to rehabilitate major supply routes will make a big difference to people’s lives.’
In many areas where roads have been improved, we have seen a decrease in violence between groups and an increase in reconciliation and peace-building activities’, he testifies.
Shearer said ‘improved access will also encourage trade, create jobs and economic growth’.
He notes that humanitarian agencies will be able to reach communities in need and save millions of dollars travelling by road than relying on air transport.
The Chief pledged that UNMISS will also be able to supply its bases and deploy peacekeepers to locations around the country more efficiently and effectively.
Shearer thanks the countries that have sent their engineers to serve South Sudan that their efforts are improving lives and prospects of securing a peaceful and more prosperous future.
