The referendum authorities marked the beginning of the referendum polling today in a celebration with hundreds of participants, including traditional dancers and the local artists.

Addressing the participants at Nyakuron Cultural Centre in Juba, Samuel Machar, a commissioner at Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau (SSRB), said the launch was a preparation for Sunday’s vote.

Eunice Phillip, a women representative, called upon all registered women to turn up and vote.

Mama Eunice added that those who will vote early should volunteer to provide food and water to the polling staff.

The event was graced by officials from the international community and the government of south Sudan.
