A Southern Sudanese priest said that the people of the region already know what they want, encouraging them to maintain peace during the referendum vote.
Fr. Benjamin Madol, from the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, told Good News Radio about his personal involvement in the struggle for freedom in his country.Fr. Benjamin said his compatriots in Southern Sudan have been determined on the course of freedom and they know what to do on voting day.
He urged his brothers and sisters to take the week-long voting period seriously, calling for abstinence from alcohol to keep a sober mind at the polling stations.
Fr. Benjamin recalled his personal involvement in the struggle in South Sudan saying it dates back to 1964 when he was 15 and joined the rebel movement popularly known as Anyanya One.
He also recalled the long and perilous journey he made with children for three months from Rumbek to Ethiopia in 1986, adding that he has been among his people during the struggle, evangelizing them and that he has been, for his people, “a true liberator”.
Fr. Benjamin has served as a Military Chaplain and is currently the parish priest of Marial-Lou, a rural Mission in Warrap State.
