The United Nations will on Wednesday May 29th celebrate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in South Sudan.

In a statement to CRN, UNMISS says the day is an opportunity to recognize the peacekeepers professionalism, dedication and courage.

It is also to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

UNMISS recalls that more than three thousand UN personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in peacekeeping operations around the world.

In South Sudan, 67 men and women have fallen while serving with UNMISS since its inception and 12 personnel lost their lives in 2018 alone.

Every year, on 29 May, the United Nations commemorates the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers where tributes are paid to those who serve as military, police or civilians in peace operations around the world.
