The Intergovernmental Authority on Development or IGADs agreed to extend the pre-transitional period for six months to allow South Sudan’s parties have enough time to implement security arrangements and form a transitional government.

IGAD diplomatic source in Ethiopian Foreign Ministry told the South Sudan News Agency in Addis Ababa on Friday.

The official said SPLM-IO and other opposition parties demanded that a six months extension is needed to allow all parties to the deal enough time to implement peace provisions before a provisional government is formed.

IGAD believes South Sudan opposition parties have a good reason to ask for the extension so it agreed to give them six months as they requested, he said.

The reality is that they cannot form a transitional government on May 12, the time is simply too close, the official explains.

The agreement stipulates that security arrangements must be implemented before a government is formed.
