UNMISS increases patrol as tension develops in Yei

The UN Mission in South Sudan, or UNMISS says it has increased the number of its patrol troops in Yei River State to provide protection to the displaced people and aid agencies.
 
Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, David Shearer says tension and conflict is still visible in the area.
 
He describes the situation of the conflict affected civilians as ‘Very bad’.
 
Shearer calls on the humanitarian aid agencies to reach the affected areas soon to provide assistance.
 
‘In terms of UNMISS responds, he said, they have increased the patrols in the South of Yei and we have helped where needed, humanitarian and others to get to the areas in providing a full protection that’s needed. We continue to provide patrolling in to those areas’. 
 
He appeals for access to the conflict affected areas and calls for an end to the fighting.
 
‘It’s important that we are able to assist them and ready take humanitarian partners. But at the end of the day, it’s the groups themselves choosing not to fight and choosing to negotiate’ he said.
 
Shearer reiterated UNMISS’s focus on protection of civilians, monitoring and reporting on human rights, facilitating the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance and supporting the peace process.
