A hand grenade a soldier exploded during New Year’s celebrations in Mugwo payam left two dead and 29 injured.
Rafheal Wani Wilson, SPLM Secretary for Mugwo Payam, in Yei River County, told Easter Radio that the person responsible for the blast died on the spot.Mr. Wani added that the man who blew up the grenade was later identified as Simon Soka, a SPLA land corporal from the Transport Unit based at Lainya Military Camp.
The official appealed to authorities to ban all unnecessary social gatherings including discos until the referendum period ended.
Most of the victims from the grenade blast were below 18 years of age and are under treatment at Yei Civil Hospital.
