The United Nations Mine Action Service or UNMAS urges the public to be watchful of suspicious objects following a sharp rise in the number of accidents caused by explosives.

Zehrudin Sukanovic, the UNMAS Chief of Operations in South Sudan told Bakhita Radio that seven people have been injured by explosives in South Sudan this month alone.

He says six people were wounded during a grenade explosion in Jonglei State recently, and early this month a woman in Nesitu lost both legs after stepping on an unexploded device.

According to Sukanovic, over five thousand people have either been killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance or UXOs left behind by the liberation war.

He says nearly one million explosives have been destroyed since the UN mine agency started operations in the country in 2014.

He urges the public to watch out and report suspicious objects to local authorities, security agents or UNMAS.

Landmines or UXOs can be reported to 0920001055 or via email at report@unmas.org
