People with disabilities are complaining of hitches in the 2011 self-determination referendum of south Sudan.
Some of the disabled who spoke to SCR News during their first ever congress in Juba and expressed displeasure on the way their concerns were neglected by the government and the UN agencies.Henry Soka Joseph has a visual impairment. He said the voting materials were not translated into Braille script which puts his choice in the hands of an assistant.
Mr. Soka added that during the April elections officials at first did not allow him to use an assistant in order to vote.
Daniel Deng, with a physical impairment, said the posters reflecting the inclusion of disabled people in the referendum were an insult because they had not been included in reality.
He added the UN and other agencies should have played a major role to include people with disabilities into political and public life.
The total of people living with disabilities in south Sudan is not known.
