UN Human Rights Commissioners will begin a 16-day visit to South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda as part of their investigation into violations in the East African nation.
The visit of Commissioners, Yasmin Sooka, Andrew Clapham and Barney Afako to South Sudan is to gather additional information on human rights violations.
They will meet top government officials, members of civil society, religious leaders, diplomats, UN agencies and UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS in Juba from December 4 to 8 to discuss the current rights situation.
The Commissioners will visit Sudan from December 9 to12 and Uganda from December 15 to19 including refugee camps in South and East Darfur and camps Uganda, where they will meet with South Sudanese refugees.
While in Sudan and Uganda, the Commissioners will also meet government officials and community leaders, civil society organizations and UN staff working in the region.
They will travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on December 12 and meet with AU and IGAD leaders, UN officials, other members of the international community and South Sudan opposition groups.
The visit is the first since the signing of the Revitalized Peace Agreement on September 12 and the peace celebrations in Juba on October 31.
The Commission is scheduled to present a comprehensive written report to the Humans Rights Council in March 2019.
