The chief of UN Panel for South Sudan referendum arrived in Juba with his team yesterday to continue monitoring the situation ahead of the vote on self-determination.

Benjamin Mkapa, former president of Tanzania, told the press that he applauded the recently concluded voter registration saying it was successful and endorsed by his team.

Mr. Mkapa added that the Referendum Bureau is on the right track and moving fast towards the scheduled date of January 9, 2011.

Mr. Mkapa informed that the polling materials should arrive in Sudan in the next two to three days and UNMIS will transport them to the referendum centres.

He asserted that the process of reporting the results is being worked out by UNIRED, the UN elections department, with the Referendum Commission and Bureau.

Mr. Mkapa urged the authorities in charge to take care of the welfare of the referendum officials to avoid complaints after the polling exercise kicked off.
