GoSS presidential advisor on legal affairs assured former rebels pardoned last October by a presidential decree that they are safe and will not be charged.

George Athor Deng, who rebelled against the government when he failed to become governor of Jonglei state, asked for clarifications on the executive pardon issued to him and his forces.

Advisor Telar Deng told the press that GoSS formed a committee to talk to the pardoned rebels to assure that they would not be accountable of their rebellion.

Mr. Telar added that the committee was part of a confidence building programme.

Mr. Telar sai the pardon was effective from the day it was signed and covered crimes committed until that date.

He added that offences committed after the presidential pardon was issued may not legally be covered.

In October, Goss President, Salva Kiir, issued an executive order pardoning some armed groups that had splintered from the SPLA.

Among the pardoned were George Athor, Gabriel Tanginya, Thomas Mabior Dhol, Gatluak Gai, and Colonel Robert Gwang.
