UNAMID deploys mission to help mudslides-affected families in South Darfur

The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur or UNAMID deployed a joint team to provide emergency assistance to people affected by mudslides in East Jebel Marra, South Darfur.
 
A statement issued on Thursday, says heavy rains last week caused mudslides in Wadi Tuliba and Tagulei villages, killing at least 19 people and injuring 25 others.
 
Official local sources said an unspecified number remain unaccounted for and some families have lost their homes.
 
The sources explained that a team comprising civilian staff, humanitarian aid, 70 peacekeepers, 30 Special Forces and six doctors, reached the affected area.
 
The team is assessing the situation; provide medical assistance, non-food items such as tents and plastic sheets for shelter, kitchen sets, blankets and mosquito nets to the affected community.
 
UNAMID Special Representative Jeremiah Mamabolo and UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Gwi-Yeop Son expressed their deepest condolences to the families that lost their loved ones during the disaster.
 
They pledged to assist the survivors within their organizations’ limited resources.
