The government of south Sudan says that it cannot retaliate northern attacks in remote border areas to protect the referendum at this critical stage of the peace deal.
GoSS minister of Information Barnaba Marial Benjamin told SCR News that the government’s priority was to defend the referendum.He added that the non-retaliation policy was not signalling weakness but commitment to peace in front of the international community.
Mr. Marial said GoSS alerted UNMIS for SAF’s violations of the permanent ceasefire.
He urged UNMIS to take up its role and react to Khartoum’s attacks.
A UN investigation team confirmed that SAF aircraft carried out strikes against some locations in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region.
GoSS accused SAF for bombing its territory at least three times injuring and displacing many people.
