UN Human Rights Commissioners visits South Sudan

Members of the UN Human Rights Commission on Monday began their fifth field mission to South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan and Ethiopia.
 
In a press statement, the mission that will be led by Yasmin Sooka and membership of Andrew Clapham and Barney Afako, will be in country from August 20 to 24.
 
The commissioners are expected to meet government officials including the First Vice President and key ministers, members of civil society, religious leaders and diplomats.
 
They will meet UN agencies and staff of UNMISS, including head of Mission in South Sudan David Shearer to discuss the current human rights situation.
 
The Commissioners also intends to pay a four day visit to UN camps for internally displaced persons across the country.
 
In the report the group will leave the country next week for Uganda, Sudan and Kenya to see refugee camps and settlements along the South Sudanese border.
 
The Commission is to determine and report the facts and circumstances of suspected gross violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes.
 
It will present an oral update on the human rights situation in South Sudan to the Council on  September 17and a comprehensive written report in March next year.
