International Committee of the Red Cross or ICRC says it has reached eight thousand families with food and shelter in Leer of Unity State after weeks of fighting in the area.
Beatrice Oechsli, Deputy Head of delegation in Juba, says the first distribution took place on Wednesday in Loth and ICRC is aiming to reach over 3000 families over the coming days.
She notes in a statement that the team on the ground found people living, under trees and surviving on wild fruits and some fish.
The head says aid distributions are planned in the coming weeks to reach Leer town, Padeah, and Dablual areas.
This week’s delivery of assistance was the first time the ICRC was able to provide relief in the area since March after the teams delivered seeds and farming tools, she explains.
‘While a vital lifeline today, these distributions will not be enough to sustain families through the rainy season,’ says Oechsli.
‘Continuous humanitarian assistance will be critical to ensure communities do not slide deeper into hunger and their needs are met’, she stresses.
