The Chairperson of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission or JMEC, strongly condemns the attack on UNMISS and humanitarian providers in Yei River State that resulted in the death of a peacekeeper.

Festus Mogae in a statement expresses his deepest condolences to UNMISS, family, friends and colleagues of the slain UN Bangladeshi peacekeeper.

He urges all warring parties to ensure that UN agencies and humanitarian providers have unhindered access and can operate safely and freely in South Sudan.

The chairman says individuals who attack UN or humanitarian personnel are violating Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Access.

He calls on the government of South Sudan and all warring parties operating in the area of this latest killing to bring perpetrators of this attack to justice.

Violators must be identified and made to face the law, Mogae points out.

This is the most recent example of several disturbing trends as the third attack against UNMISS peacekeepers since May 3, 2018.

Six humanitarian aid workers have lost their lives and UN reported 384 access incidents this year.
