South Sudan is at risk of maternal death, says Director for Reproductive Health in the National Ministry of Health.

Dr Alexander Dimiti says official midwives are not enough for the whole country and is the reason why there are so many mothers dying when giving birth.

There are over 600 trained professional midwives right now in the country in additional to those sent for training abroad, the doctor discloses.

Ojulong Patrick, Executive Director for Action Group for Health Human Rights and HIV/AIDS Uganda, says the death of women giving birth is higher according to the statistics in South Sudan compared to Uganda.

He says this is as a result of the challenges that are hindering the health sector in South Sudan.

South Sudan is among the worst countries with high maternal mortality rate.
