South Sudan’s prison authorities have starting engaging inmates in cultivation as another means to provide enough food for prisoners across the country.
Deputy Director of Juba Prison William Andrea Ladu told CRN in an interview that they have assembled over one thousand inmates in Juba and Wau central prison to engage them in agricultural activities.
Ladu admits that delay funding, lack of water and food are among some of the challenges facing prison service.
Ladu adds that due to congestion problems they are also transferring inmates to avoid diseases.
Prison Service spokesperson, Brigadier General Anthony Oliver Legge said insecurity in some parts of the country is also prompt them to transfer some inmates to central prison in Wau and Juba.
He said explains despite challenges of feeding they are able to provide little food to inmates through good wishers.
The spokesperson says currently there over one thousand inmates in Juba and 700 hundred in Wau prison.
