Some members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly have called for increment on the annual budget allocated for health sector in the country.
Chairperson for National Legislative Committee for Health and HIV/ AIDS, Catherine Peter Laa says health budget increment by 6% can reduce high maternal deaths.
Laa told members of the assembly that cases of maternal deaths have increased due to lack of equipment and limited number of health workers in remote areas.
She urges members to unite and push for health financial plan increment.
However, Laa says maternal mortality can be prevented through capacity building trainings to mother and provision of health equipment across the country.
She spoke during a round table meeting that brought together members of the national legislative assembly, representatives of national civil society’s organizations and media houses held in Juba on Wednesday.
According to a report from the World Health Organization or WHO South Sudan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
While, United Nations Population Fund or UNFPA estimates that in 2015 alone around 303 000 women died as a result of pregnancy or childbirth, leaving hundreds of thousands of children motherless.
