South Sudan celebrates World Press Freedom Day

Journalist and other groups in South Sudan will join the globe to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on Thursday in Juba and other towns.
 
The event is under the theme: ‘Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law’.
 
UNESCO in collaboration with the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) and South Sudan Media Authority organize the Day.
 
Senior government officials, media associations, representatives of the diplomatic missions, media development partners and UN agencies are expected to deliver speeches.
 
There will be presentations on the media landscape in South Sudan and safety and security of journalists in relation to transparency of the political processes.
 
Independence of the judicial system, media literacy and the accountability of state institutions towards the public are other topics to be discussed.
 
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every 3rd of May, to evaluate press freedom around the world, commemorate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to defend the media from attacks and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives.
