A SPLM official in South Kordofan said the aftermath of the referendum on self-determination for Southern Sudan may affect the already overdue elections for the state legislative assembly.
Younan Albarut Ajur is the SPLM chairman in Heiban County, Southern Kordofan State. He told Voice of Peace the NCP pushed the state elections up to next April while the SPLM wanted them before the end of the year.Mr. Albarut said the results of the plebiscite may affect the state elections, especially if there is post-referendum violence.
He added that Nuba Mountains people have the right to hold their own elections.
Mr. Albarut said the state electoral commission demarcated 32 geographical constituencies based on the new census that took place some months ago.
The elections for South Kordofan Legislative Assembly are scheduled for April 9 to 18, 2011.
