The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General strongly condemns the killing of civilians and abduction of women and children in Duk Payuel Village of Duk County in Jonglei State.

David Shearer in a statement urges the leaders of both communities to show restraint and end the cycle of revenge killings.

He calls on national and local authorities to support community leaders and work to bring perpetrators of all attacks to account.

Perpetrators of this violence have undermined the ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts that the UN Mission in South Sudan supported in Jonglei, Shearer says.

The Special Representative expresses UNMISS commitment to work to help to bring peace to the area.

Reports suggest that around 45 people were killed and 19 injured during the attack in Duk Payuel Village of Duk County in Jonglei State on Tuesday.
