The Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan has strongly condemned the attack in Duk Payuel village, Duk County in Jonglei State on Tuesday, which claimed forty-five lives, 19 people injured, including three aid workers.
Alain Noud√©hou in a statement says ‘it is outrageous that civilians and humanitarians providing assistance continue to be targeted’.
He calls on all armed elements to respect civilians and aid workers, wherever they are in the country.
The Coordinator says it is unacceptable that those trying to help are being attacked and killed when humanitarian needs have reached unprecedented levels.
The safety and security of aid workers must be respected for us to continue to provide life-saving relief to the civilians’ suffering, he cautions.
The Coordinator demands that the ‘perpetrators must be held accountable and senseless cycles of violence must stop.
He sends his deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those impacted by this terrible attack.
This attack brings the number of aid workers slain in South Sudan since the beginning of the December 2013 crisis to 92, including 25 killed in 2017.
