UN peacekeepers are expected to reach more vulnerable people in remote parts of South Sudan through quick and practical approach, says Chief of the Mission or UNMISS.

In a press release seen by CRN, David Shearer says 71,000 displaced people are currently living in Akobo and the surrounding areas after fleeing fighting between government and opposition forces.

UNMISS is looking at ways of extending a presence in the town’ he adds.

UNMISS needs to reach communities in need in all parts of the country, regardless of their ethnic or political background, Chie Shearer points out.

He discloses that he was in Akobo to listen to the needs of the community, the local authorities and humanitarian agencies.

It is important to hear from the humanitarian aid workers working in the area how the presence of peacekeepers and other Mission personnel can help, Shearer notes.

UNMISS has been stepping up flights into Akobo sending in peacekeepers and staff on temporary assignments.
