A leading Church official said the Catholic Bishops of Sudan and other Church leaders are committed to a successful and peaceful referendum for South Sudan self-determination.

Retired Bishop Paride Taban of Torit told the congregation Our Lady of Assumption Church in Torit on Sunday that the he and his colleague bishops were working day and night to ensure the referendum was a success.

Bishop Paride urged the people of Southern Sudan to register and turn up to vote on January 9, 2011 for the international community to accept the results of the referendum.

The Bishop Emeritus of Torit said leaders from the different churches in the Sudan were in the USA and in the European Union to lobby for Southern Sudan and Abyei referenda.

Bishop Paride who integrated the delegation to the USA said UN chief Ban Ki-moon and US president Barak Obama showed willingness to support the referenda.

The Catholic Church had a leading role advocating for the referendum with the slogan Let my People Choose.
