Some South Sudanese civil society activists are calling on IGAD to set a specific date for the forthcoming forum aimed at revitalizing the peace agreement.
The Executive Director of the South Sudan Network for Democracy and Elections or SSUNDE says if IGAD fails to meet the deadline, it should hand over the mediation process to another body. He says they applaud IGAD for the step taken so far to consult all the party to the agreement.
Muhandis says it’s important for IGAD to set a clear time frame for the revitalization. But if IGAD fails to do the process should be handed over to the African Union. He accused some of regional countries of having personal interest in South Sudan.
Marikaje Lorna, Secretary General for the South Sudan Democratic Engagement Monitoring and Observation Program, says civil society activists admit some progress has been made under IGAD’s leadership.
She also says other guarantors of peace deal should also be involved in the process.
Lorna says the upcoming revitalized peace process IGAD should avoid dealing with personalities but to whole South Sudan as a nation.
IGAD special envoy to South Sudan on Tuesday say the process will be underway within two months period.
