Eye witnesses say at least five police officers were killed including one female officer in a clash between armed youth and the police in Rumbek town on Sunday.

Raphael Makuei says the issue started when two armed youth entered Rumbek town and a policeman tried to disarm one of the youths but they refused. The police then shot one dead.

Makuei says the youth then mobilize themselves and attack the police station in the town which last for three hours. He confirmed that some police officers were killed before the army came and chest the youth out.

Western Lakes State Information Minister Shadrack Bol Machok confirmed the incident but insists only one police officer was killed. He adds that the government has deployed more security around Rumbek for patrol.

Bol calls it as an isolated incident and urges Galweng youth to remain calm.

Isaac Majier, the head of a civil society alliance in greater Lakes condemned the incident and says civilians must never take the law into their own hands.

Minister Bol called on residents to remain calm as the government works to bring the attackers to the book.
