The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC will gradually resume its activities in Western Equatoria region after the suspension following the tragic death of its driver.

Fran√ßois Stamm, ICRC’s head of delegation in South Sudan in a statement says ICRC has received assurances and security guarantees to restart their activities in the Equatoria region.

He says ICRC driver Lukudu Laki Kennedy Emmanuel was shot dead on 8 September this year.

Since the killing of their staff, ICRC carried out only life-saving activities, such as medical evacuations for the wounded, says Stamm.

He warns that any attack on their staff and other humanitarian workers is unacceptable.

Stamm adds that attacking humanitarian aid workers seriously hinders the delivery of much needed assistance.

The activities of the ICRC in the Equatoria region include distribution of seeds and tools to communities, visits to detainees in prison and medical evacuations.

The ICRC calls on all actors to ensure free humanitarian access to the civilian population affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence in South Sudan.

He renews their call to all parties to the conflict to respect the neutrality of humanitarian workers and the Red Cross.
