Rumbek referendum centres recorded a lower female turn up with more people registering on the second day than the first.

Good News Radio yesterday made a round of some centres within Rumbek, noting that more people turned up for registration on day two than on day one and most of the registered voters were male.

One of the registrars at Matangai Centre, Victoria Alek, said men turned up to register because they had more free time than women who are caught up by household chores.

Ms. Alek urged women to turn up and have their names registered to take part in the referendum.

Peter Mour Anyar, a supervisor at Matangai Centre, attributed women’s low turn up to poor dissemination of information especially in the villages.

Mr. Anyar said the use of radio was not enough because many people do not own radio set.

He urged the government to employ sound systems mounted on vehicles to move around in remote villages and inform people about the ongoing registration exercise.

Meanwhile, Anthony Makuach, a student at Southern Sudan Institute of Education in Rumbek, expressed his joy for getting the registration card.

He said he would take great care of it since his entire life depended on that laminated piece of paper.
