The UN Security Council urged the NCP and the SPLM to take urgent action to ensure the referenda on self-determination for Southern Sudan and Abyei are peaceful and credible.

The UN Council urged the CPA parties to take urgent action “to ensure peaceful, credible, timely and free referenda that reflect the will of the people of South Sudan and Abyei, as provided for in the CPA”, UN News reported.

The 15-member body welcomed the start of voter registration for the Southern Sudan referendum.

It also underlined the need to make “rapid progress” for Abyei’s referendum and other outstanding CPA issues, and resolve critical post-referendum issues such as security, border, citizenship, currency and natural resources.
