The national government has declared an outbreak of the deadly crop-eating armyworm in Imotong and Jubek States.

Information Minister Michael Makuei says the cabinet has approved half a million dollars to tackle the outbreak, Radio Bakhita reports.

He advises famers across the country to be vigilant and report suspected cases to authorities to prevent spread of the pest.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, armyworm can cause extensive destruction to crops such as maize, sorghum and other cereals.

The pest is difficult to control with a single type of pesticide especially when it has reached an advanced stage.

Armyworms were recently declared in neighboring Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.
