The government says this year’s Independence Day celebrations will not take place, but a public holiday would be observed.

Information Minister Michael Makuei after the Council Minister meeting on Friday says the budget for the celebrations will be used for repatriating IDPs currently stranded at the airport, Radio Bakhita reports.

Last year, the government also cancelled the sixth anniversary of Independence celebrations in Juba and violence erupted between forces of President Salva Kiir and his First Vice Dr Riek Machar.
