Experts and civil rights activists are calling on the government to enact laws and policies to fight widespread hate speech and online incitement.

Professor Jacob Chol, Head of Political Science Department in University of Juba told Radio Bakhita the ongoing online hatred could fuel violence and ethnic divisions.

Government needs to develop laws and civil society organizations must increase public awareness to combat the current trend, he adds.

Susanne Bellinghausen, Head of Defy-hate-now notes that violence in the country has caused more hatred than before.

Efforts must be made to urgently address hate speech internally and in refugee camps across the region, she stresses.

The officials made the remarks during closure of a two-day workshop on hate speech in Juba on Friday.
