MPs of the National Legislative Assembly have withdrawn names of nine members confirmed to the East African Parliament due to gender inequality, says Speaker.

Anthony Lino Makana says the representation of women in the group was less than the one-third required, Radio Bakhita reports.

He says the National Assembly is working to adjust the list according to its policy to be sent this week.

The decision to withdraw the nine names of members came after a court in Tanzania issued an order stopping the swearing in of South Sudan MPs to East Africa.

Speaker Makana attributes the delay of sending the names to the East African Parliament to crisis in the National Assembly’s specialized committees.

The nine members were appointed through a presidential decree and were confirmed by the Assembly in March.

The Tanzanian court gave an order in response to a petition that challenges the appointment of the nine members through a presidential decree.

Article 50 of the East African Legislative Assembly on Election of Members says National Assembly of each member state shall elect nine MPs within its House.
