Activists urge government to expedite arms control bill to fight violence

More than 20 civil rights activists’ on Friday called on the government to revisit and approve the Small Arms control Bill.
 
The activists believe it will reduce gun violence and spread of illegal firearms in the hands of civilians, Radio Bakhita reports.
 
They observe that the presence of illegal guns have added more suffering to the civil population.
 
Moese Monday John is the Executive Director of Organization for Nonviolence and Development, ONAD. He says it is important for people to distance themselves from the use of weapons.
 
The firearms among communities have also increased violence against women, says Avia Mariah, Advocacy Officer for civil society organization, STEWARDWOMEN.
 
She urges organizations to fight against the illegal ownership of guns.
 
According to a survey on Small Arms conducted in 2014, South Sudan has millions of illegal and unregulated firearms in the hands of civilians.
 
The report says the country has not systematically destroyed surplus or non-serviceable firearms after gaining independence in 2011.
 
The officials were peaking during one-day workshop on small arms control in Juba, organized AMWISS.
