The Catholic Mission of Mapuordit, Lakes state, organized today a referendum marathon to mark the two-month countdown for the plebiscite scheduled for January 9, 2011.

The six-kilometre Mapuordit Referendum Marathon was done under the theme “Sudan will never be the same again” taken from the pastoral letter of the Bishops of Sudan during their last July plenary.

Fr. Daniele Moschetti headed the marathon committee. He told Good News Radio in an e-mail that the event’s goal was to run and walk together in solidarity with all the people of South Sudan for a peaceful referendum.

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari of Rumbek told the plenary of Sudan Catholic Bishops that Mapuordit Marathon was done to advocate for peace, justice and reconciliation.

Mapuordit Referendum Marathon was the very first event of its kind.

It took place while the Catholic Bishops of Sudan are meeting in Rumbek with the referendum as one of the themes for their deliberations.
